This week during quarantine, I was able to leave and go shopping at Firewheel. I figured since the restaurants were able to open at 25% and most people are stir crazy that they be busy. However, to my surprise, there was barely anyone out and made me rethink the way people have reacted to the news of the virus. In recent news, the total cases in the US alone are now 1 million with roughly 67,000 deaths. In Texas, most cases are in Dallas county, and with the rhetoric from the news surrounding the infection rate and nature which the virus picks and chooses its victims. I feel like the news has overreacted and have used fear tactics to keep the country as a whole locked down for an unreasonable amount of time. I’ve met and seen the two types of people, one who just doesn’t care if they get the virus or not and they live their normal life. Then the other one who lives in fear that even an Amazon delivery guy can’t deliver a package to the person’s door, without the person thinking any contact with others will give them the virus. The majority of the population are these people thinking that anyone they have contact with will infect them, and this is what the media and the democrats want, so the country is locked down for as long as it can, to further kill the economy, and swing an election.This week during quarantine, I was able to leave and go shopping at Firewheel. This semester I’ve learned to critically think and relate the old text to issues we face in the world in the present day. Also, I learned how to adapt to abnormal situations, such as this quarantine and online schooling. I didn’t achieve everything I wanted to, however, my objectives did change once online school began. My plan was always to put my best foot forward when facing tough assignments and to give my all. I drafted ideas better during the semester and I realized that even when I overthink, I actually am critically thinking. I needed to improve my motivation to do a smaller assignment such as the blogs. It wasn’t that I thought they were hard to do, or that I didn’t have the time, I simply made the conscious decision every week not to do them. I know I can accomplish many big things and I needed to include smaller things as they are important as well. So as this is only the 4-5th blog I’ve written, I regret not putting in the effort to complete them.

We discussed how the musical, Hamilton came to be. Watched the first song to introduce the play we will begin reading/ listening to. As well as review the reading of the use of rhetoric that Hamilton used. Later in the week we created and responded to discussion questions thus far from the play. Including how Aaron Burr and Hamilton are competing for the top spot, however, Burr has a lot to lose while Hamilton has nothing to lose, and how this will affect the play later on.

I noticed rhetoric this week through work and the super bowl. At work, there was a waitress who didn’t want to do her job, so the manager had to motivate her using ethos, as well as logos. The ethos being the potential tip money she could earn and the logos being the fact of if she gives the table excellent service, the people will come back and want to be served by her. Also during the super bowl, there were many commercials that appealed to the main ethos, through the want of the newest chip flavor to what people did before the Amazon Alexa.

The image above shows rhetoric through ethos and logos. Ethos due to the moment of reality where there’s something you don’t want to do and this product prevents you from doing the task. Then logos through the way that the product is shown to benefit the consumer in a proficient manner.

We went over the syllabus in class this week. Which included the main guidelines and expectations for the semester. One of the primary points the professor made was about my grades for the semester. As in the semester previous, there was grace towards slightly late grades. Similar to a “set of training wheels” as she would say. This semester late assignments won’t count, unless something serious arises and I let her know via email, before the assignment due date. Then, she discussed the plan for this semester and introduced the theme, rhetoric, and arguments. Furthermore, where and how rhetoric takes place in my daily life.

With that said, this past week I experienced both rhetoric and arguments. When I was driving to school on Monday, this lady merged into my lane without using her blinker or taking the time to check her surroundings. I know I didn’t hit her but when I stopped at the red light she got out of her car and came to my car saying I hit her. Well, the light had turned green and I told her to meet me in the Kroger parking lot. When we had parked at Kroger she continued to back her original claim. I disagreed and used logos, saying that if I hit her then why is there no damage to my small car while she was driving a big suburban. I used rhetoric to back my argument and I won the argument, then drove to school. Now I’m aware of the many cases of rhetoric in my daily life.

The image above is using rhetoric through pathos, which ties into your emotions. The image portrays how your body will look if you don’t use Lucky Cigarettes over the other brands. This is a strong use of pathos as people would rather be seen as the healthier-looking woman over the unhealthy one.
